artist statement

I make abstract oil paintings that take a personal, interior world and place it in a geographical one. After period of professional burnout, it was the caves of the Cornish coast that helped me find myself again. In their darkness, my own inner world became brighter. Fascinated by portals, thresholds and our relationship to place, my work moves you from the microscopic to the monolithic, through passages of darkness, colour fields and particles of light. Lines trace the passing of time or an exchange of energy. Cell-like entities sit against rock faces. It is all a reminder that we are made of the same minerals and part of a greater natural landscape.

artist bio

Sarah Hamilton Brewer is an emerging artist living and working in St Agnes, Cornwall. She studied Fine Art at Kingston University, graduating in 2006 but went on to become a professional hair and make up artist for Film and TV, working in that industry for 15 years. During this time she sought deeper meaning to her work which led her to train in energy healing - reiki and sound. Exploring mantra and meditation, she also ran an online crystal mala and jewellery business. Although varied, each aspect of her professional life has informed her current practice and was a hint to what really drives Sarah’s work - seeking out the inner world, understanding the different aspects of self and the multi-layered realities we live in. It has only been through the exploration of esoteric themes that brought Sarah the visual and literal vocabulary that now characterises her work. Moving to Cornwall in 2020 put her back in a landscape that inspired her, finding comfort in the ancient rocks of the coastline after a period of burnout. Being in a place where artists have gathered for decades gave her the impetus to return to painting in 2025.
